르깟을 다시 한국에서 선보일 수 있어 매우 기대됩니다. 이번 전시는 서울 북촌의 중심, 공간썬더에서 여러분을 찾아갑니다.

1983년 벨기에 일간지《르 수아르》에서 처음 등장한 이 통통한 고양이는 40년 동안 24권의 베스트셀러 책(1,500 만 부 판매)과 15 종류의 다른 언어로 번역되었으며, 전 세계 독자에게 사랑받아 왔습니다. 특히 3년 전부터는 한국어판도 출간되어, 르깟 특유의 재치 있고 철학적인 유머가 국경을 넘어 이렇게 쉽게 전해진다는 사실이 작가로서도 놀랍고 즐겁습니다. 1991년부터는 회화와 브론즈 조각으로도 확장되었고, 2021년 파리 샹젤리제에서 시작된 야외 전시 《Le Cat Walks》는 보르도, 캉, 몽트뢰, 모나코, 제네바, 브뤼셀을 순회하며 수백만 관람객을 맞았습니다.

서울 전시는 특히 뜻깊습니다. 판화와 더불어 르깟의 유쾌함을 담은 오브제까지 국내 최초로 공개되며, 2027년 브뤼셀 개관 예정인 《Le Cat and Cartoon Museum》으로 가는 여정의 중요한 이정표이기 때문입니다. 아직 한국을 직접 방문하진 못했지만, 브뤼셀 작업실을 찾은 한국 관람객들 덕분에 한국에 대한 기대가 큽니다. 르깟이 여러분께 작은 웃음과 소박한 꿈을 선물하길 바랍니다.

<LE CAT MEETS BUKCHON>

It is a great joy to bring Le Cat back to Korea—this  time to Space Thunder in the heart of Bukchon,  Seoul.

I first drew this curious, chubby feline for the Belgian  daily Le Soir in 1983. Forty years, 24 bestselling  albums (15 million copies sold), and 15 languages  later—including Korean since three years ago—I’m  still delighted, and a little amused, that his quirky,  philosophical humor crosses cultures so easily. In  1991 I began painting and sculpting Le Cat, and a  career highlight was ‘Le Cat Walks’, the monumental  outdoor show on the Champs-Élysées in 2021 that  later toured Bordeaux, Caen, Montreux, Monaco,  Geneva, and Brussels, welcoming millions of visitors.

This Seoul exhibition is special: alongside fine-art  prints it unveils playful Le Cat objets—small pieces  of quirkiness and poetry—and looks ahead to the  opening of the ‘Le Cat and Cartoon Museum’ in  Brussels in 2027. Although I have yet to set foot in  Korea, the Korean visitors I’ve welcomed to my  Brussels studio have left a vivid, warm impression,  and I look forward to discovering your country soon.  I hope my Cat makes you laugh, think, and  dream—just a little.
