교토에서 아트 레지던시 작가로 한 달을 머무는 동안, 나는 자주 걸었다. 목적지에 도착하기 위해서라기보다, 장소의 표면이 어떻게 이미지를 머금고 있는지 보기 위해서였다. 유리창에 비친 하늘, 닳은 벽의 얼룩, 매끈한 금속 위에 잠시 머물다 사라지는 얼굴들. 그 이미지들은 늘 완전하지 않았다. 직접 보이는 것보다 반사된 것, 선명한 것보다 흐려진 것, 중심보다 주변에 남은 것들이 더 오래 눈에 들어왔다.

『 PLASTIC MOUNTS 』는 그렇게 걸으며 만난 이미지들을 오래된 프로젝터용 플라스틱 마운트에 끼워 엮은 책이다. 작고 투명한 프레임은 한때 필름을 빛으로 확대해 벽 위에 띄우기 위한 도구였지만, 이제는 거의 쓰이지 않는 물건이 되었다. 나는 그 남겨진 규격 안에 35mm 필름 이미지를 다시 넣고, 그것들을 손으로 엮었다. 이미지는 커지지 않고, 오히려 더 작아진 채 남는다. 그래서 보는 사람은 가까이 다가가야 하고, 페이지를 천천히 넘겨야 하며, 빛을 찾아야 한다.

이 책에서 중요한 것은 사진이 무엇을 찍었는가만이 아니다. 이미지가 어떤 몸을 빌려 나타나는지, 어떤 프레임 안에서 보관되고, 어떤 손의 속도로 읽히는지가 함께 중요하다. 플라스틱의 미세한 흠집과 투명도, 필름의 작은 크기, 페이지를 넘길 때 생기는 간격은 모두 이미지의 일부가 된다. 장소는 한 장의 풍경으로 고정되지 않고, 표면과 반사와 잔상으로 흩어진다.

『 PLASTIC MOUNTS 』의 FUJIFILM Photo Dummy Book Award 입선은 이 작은 책이 품고 있는 느린 보기의 방식을 다시 소개할 수 있는 계기가 되었다. 이번 전시는 책이 만들어진 과정과 그 안에 담긴 이미지의 물성을 함께 펼쳐 보인다. 사라진 방식의 흔적으로 남은 플라스틱 마운트는 여기서 새로운 읽기의 장치가 된다. 이미지는 벽 위로 커지지 않아도 된다. 손 안에서 농축된 채, 우리가 통과한 장소의 표면을 조용히 다시 불러오면 충분하다.

PLASTIC MOUNTS is a record of small images that began during a one-month artist residency in Kyoto. As the artist walked through an unfamiliar place, her gaze often stopped before smooth surfaces. On windows, metal, plastic, damp pavement, and worn exterior walls, landscapes did not appear directly; instead, they arrived reflected, layered, and blurred. Collecting these incomplete images, the artist became attentive to the fact that a place is not always remembered as a clear and fixed scene.

This book is a hand-bound photobook made by inserting 35mm film into old plastic mounts once used for slide projectors. These mounts were formerly part of a device that enlarged small film images with light and projected them onto a wall, but today they remain as an almost obsolete format. The artist brings this disappearing medium back into the hand, arranging the images not to be seen large, but to be read small and slowly. The images inside the mounts reveal themselves only when one looks closely, changes the angle, and searches for light.

In PLASTIC MOUNTS, images are less complete landscapes than residues left on the surfaces of places. Reflected light, blurred outlines, tiny scratches, and the thickness of transparent plastic all reveal that an image always appears through a material body. The act of turning the pages overlaps with the rhythm of walking, while the small frames quietly recall the surfaces of the places passed through in Kyoto.

This exhibition commemorates the selection of PLASTIC MOUNTS for the FUJIFILM Photo Dummy Book Award while also introducing the materiality and making process of the book. Here, photography is presented not simply as a medium that preserves scenes, but as a publishing object in which the remnants of a disappearing technology, the labor of the hand, and the sensation of reading place come together. The small image no longer expands onto the wall. Instead, it remains slowly in the hand, readjusting the distance and time through which we look at images.
