이번 전시를 준비하면서 잠재에 대한 생각을 다시금 되새기게 되었습니다. 몇 년 전 티비를 보던 방구석 틈 사이로 꿈꾸다니는 먼지에 존재를 발견하게 되었고, 그로부터 당장 세상에서 가장 차있는 자국을 보았습니다. 어찌나 안타까운지, 내가 만들어내는 화면에서만큼은 먼지를 주인공으로 가장 먼저 눈에 띄게 해야겠다 싶어 만들어진 이야기가 지금의 먼지 시리즈입니다. 눈에 잘 띄지 않는다고, 구석에만 굴러다닌다고 존재하지 않는 것은 아닙니다. 어쩌면 먼지는 그런 자기의 몸집을 굴러가며 존재를 입증해 내고 있었는지도 몰라요.

여기 또 다른 시리즈 hideaway(은신처)도 존재합니다. 이 시리즈는 감당하기 벅찬 감정에 대해 이야기합니다. 우리 안에는 수많은 감정들이 존재합니다. 어떤 감정은 금세 알아차리기도 하지만 가끔은 구분하기가 어려운 감정들이 있습니다. 또 이겨내려 해도 쉽게 이겨내지지 않는 감정들도 많습니다. 어떤 감정이든 제 안에 들어와 쉬이 해결되지 않으면 굳이 억지로 내쫓지 않고 방에 들어가게 했습니다. 감정들의 은신처인 셈이죠. 자극자극 쌓인 감정들은 어느새 문을 열어보면 이미 가버린 경우도 있습니다. 그럼 그저 잘 잤겠거니, 합니다.

보일 듯 말 듯, 열심히 숨어 있지만 분명 존재하는 먼지들.

<Barely There>

GU Solo Exhibition

Preparing this exhibition led me to reflect anew on what it means to exist.

A few years ago, while watching TV, I noticed a small clump of dust drifting out from a corner of my room. In that tiny, seemingly insignificant thing, I saw something of myself. I felt an unexpected tenderness toward it. At least within the world of my work, I wanted dust to become the first thing people would notice. That was how the Dusty series began.

Dusty is not simply about dust itself. It is about those of us who live like dust—easily overlooked, quietly swept aside, yet always returning, always trying to prove that we exist.

Just because something goes unnoticed, or spends its life tucked away in forgotten corners, does not mean it doesn’t exist. Perhaps dust proves its existence by gathering the world onto itself as it rolls, growing larger with every passing moment. In doing so, it quietly makes its presence known.

Alongside the Dusty series is another body of work, Hideaway. This series explores emotions that feel too overwhelming to hold.

We all carry countless emotions. Some reveal themselves immediately, while others are difficult to recognize or even name. Many refuse to disappear, no matter how hard we try to overcome them. Whenever an emotion settled inside me and would not leave, I stopped trying to force it away. Instead, I gave it a room—a place where it could simply stay. It became a hideaway for my emotions.

Over time, these emotions quietly accumulate. Then one day, when I open the door, I sometimes find that they are already gone. When that happens, I simply let them go.

Barely There.

Barely visible, barely understood—the emotions that quietly live within us.
Barely visible, quietly hiding—those who live like dust, reminding us that what goes unseen still exists.
