고려대학교 디자인조형학부 예술 전시 기획 동아리 DEKHAUS의 일곱 번째 정기전 <음의 것들>은 ‘정의되기 위해 배제된 것들’에 주목한다. 사회는 효율과 편의를 목적으로 하여 ‘주된 것들’을 정의하고 주변을 만들어낸다. 이렇게 정의된 이들이 겪은 것은 말하고자 하는 대상과 그 대상이 아닌 것을 분류하여 뜻을 매기는 행위다. 분류의 끝에 대상은 명확해지는 만큼 단순하고 제한된 상태로 고정된다. 여기에는 어떠한 의외성도 다양성도 존재하지 않는다. 반면 배제된, 대상이 아닌 것으로 타자화된 이들은 스스로를 정의할 말을 가지지 못한다. 그러나 변두리 것들은 사회의 시선에서 소외된 사이, 존재하지만 존재하지 않는 음의 신화를 형성해 왔다.

  이번 전시 <음의 것들>은 중심에서 밀려나 제2, 제3의 위치에 놓인 존재들에 주목했다. 단순히 부정으로서의 ‘음’이 아니라 양과 공존하는 음, 세계 반쪽을 지탱하는 음, 정의되지 않기에 오히려 자유로운 것들을 주제로 한다. 전시에 참여한 작가들은 회화, 설치, 미디어 등 다양한 매체를 통해 음의 세계를 현현시킨다. 작가들은 각자 음을 배제하는 폭력과 착취의 구조, 버려지는 것들, 개인의 내면에 인식되지 않는 영역 등에 집중하여 자신만의 조형 언어로 이를 풀어낸다. 

  ‘음’을 하나의 결핍이나 병리로 다루기 보단 자신과 타인, 그리고 세계가 관계 맺는 과정에서 형성된 복합적인 층위로 바라본다. 그리하여 이곳은 새로운 의미와 가치가 탄생하는 공간이다. 정의된 것들의 한계에서 벗어나 가장자리에 서서 세계를 바라볼 때, 비로소 더 자유롭고 다채로운 풍경이 펼쳐진다.

The seventh annual exhibition Negative Things by DEKHAUS, an art exhibition–curation club of the School of Art & Design at Korea University, focuses on “those excluded in order for definitions to exist.” In pursuit of efficiency and convenience, society defines what is considered “primary,” inevitably producing a surrounding periphery. Through this process, what is spoken of and what is not become separated and assigned meaning. At the end of classification, the subject becomes clearer—but also fixed in a simplified and limited state. Within such boundaries, neither unpredictability nor diversity can remain. Meanwhile, those excluded and othered as non-subjects are left without language to define themselves. Yet these marginal presences, neglected by society’s gaze, have formed a negative mythology—existing and yet not fully acknowledged as existing.

This exhibition turns its attention to beings pushed away from the center and placed in secondary or tertiary positions. Rather than treating the “negative” simply as opposition or denial, it considers the negative as something that coexists with the positive, sustains half of the world, and remains free precisely because it resists definition. Participating artists present the world of the negative through diverse media including painting, installation, and media art. Each artist explores, through their own visual language, structures of violence and exploitation that exclude the negative, what is discarded, and the unrecognized territories within the self.

Instead of approaching the “negative” as lack or pathology, the exhibition views it as a complex layer formed through relationships between self, others, and the world. In doing so, the exhibition becomes a space where new meanings and values emerge. When we step beyond the limits of what has been defined and stand at the margins to observe the world, a freer and more multifaceted landscape finally unfolds.
